- Wood, Joseph, Lloyd, and Atkins (2009) conducted the foundational study on gratitude and sleep specifically. In 401 adults, trait gratitude significantly predicted better self-reported sleep duration, sleep quality, and daytime functioning, with faster reported sleep onset. They tested whether pre-sleep cognitions mediated these effects — and found significant mediation: a substantial portion of gratitude's association with better sleep ran through reduced negative pre-sleep cognitions (worry, rumination) and increased positive pre-sleep cognitions (Wood et al., 2009).
